BleuLearn Performing Arts standard: Performance — music, drama, dance — is a documented form of cultural record. Spirituals preserved coded information about escape routes. The Harlem Renaissance documented a cultural and intellectual explosion in primary sources that include recordings, playscripts, and photographs. Performing arts is primary source evidence of a different kind — not written, but documented.

Document a Performance or Musical Piece

Apply the Modified Four Questions to a Performance

Q1 — Who created it? (What community, tradition, or individual? What was their position — were they enslaved, free, in resistance, in celebration?)

Q2 — When was it created? (Historical context — what was happening in the community that produced this?)

Q3 — What does it say or do? (Describe the performance — what does it communicate, celebrate, mourn, or resist?)

Q4 — Why does it matter? (What does this performance document that a written source from the same period cannot?)
